Researchers are trying to work on this type of machine to help people who are paralysed communicate or move their limbs. They put electrodes on their scalp, or actually insert electrodes in their brain, and train the patient to try to control their thoughts in such a way that a computer can learn to distinguish between different patterns of brain activity, and translate this into moving a cursor on a screen for example, or moving a finger or an arm in a certain way.
