There is a whole range of tests that I do with children. The number and type of tests depend on the particular thinking skill that we want to study. In the project that I’m currently working on, we are interested in various types of thinking skills, including the ability to hold things in mind, how many words children know, how well they can reason, if they can pay attention, and other things. This is quite a large number of twenty tests that take around 3 hours to complete. In other studies, we are sometimes only interested in one particular skill and would not have that many different tests. Some of these tests are on a computer, others are done with pen and paper, and for some, I would just ask questions.
Most of the tests that we use have been done before with a very large number of children at different ages. This allows us to compare how well one child did to all the children who have done the test before. This way, we can say if someone is doing well for their age or compare their performance to older or younger children.
